Lincoln Lake 2024
Full blog with photos: hike734.com/trip/lincoln-lake-2024/
Since the last time I've hiked Lincoln Lake in Glacier National Park (over 13 years ago), a forest fire came through. The result is a hike that's teeming with life and views looking to the surrounding mountains. While it's still not a top ten hike, the changed landscape makes this a much more enjoyable hike than in the past.

Pitamakan - Dawson via the South Shore Trail 2022
Interesting watch. Never seen the waterfall from that vantage, only from above on the Gunsight Pass Trail and Lincoln Peak.
Thank you! We are going there the first week of August and chose this as our backpacking hike. Can't wait.
Thanks for another great video
Awesome, Jake! Sprague Creek Fire 2017, right? I remember that fire...lots of September smoke in Apgar that year. Great bird video and how about Beaver Chief Falls, wow!
Well done sir
Thanks!
Always great videos. Thanks for the share. Looks beautiful. Hope t get there in the next year or so. Have a good & safe Summer J&K. Cheers from ORegon
Thank you! You too!
That townsend solitaire is a nice catch that would have been a lifer for me but I didn't get it maybe next time
I love them! We were climbing this past weekend and had one sitting on a lone tree singing his heart out.
Stunning views at altitude of an already beautiful area! Last time I was at Bowman, there was a kitty warning at the Numa turnoff. Other than the goats (and ticks), have you seen any wildlife or sign around there?
Not this go-around.
So, I appreciate your date stamp, enjoy your commentary, and like that you identify the wildlife. I always hit the like button.
Awesome! Thank you!
How long does this trail take?
What beautiful and sweet views. Thanks for sharing and the tip on ticks. Hiking Divide Mtn next week. I’m conditioning for Half Dome next month. I summited Oberlin July 22’. Looking forward to coming out from ORegon for a few days. Have a safe Summer.
Thank you for continuing to show us the most beautiful national park in the country!
Another great video thanks
Love your videos man. Fan of them over here in Utah. Gonna come up to Glacier July 31-Aug 4th!
So beautiful it's utter loon-acy! Thanks for another option out of the Bowman Lake lot.
And early season too!
Always appreciate your Intel Jake, thanks!
You bet!
Up and down hills, mich like the Merry Mountain trail, a real workout!
Another one I need to do. Thanks for sharing!
Not done this lake, and am really wanting to do this. Looks like a lot of bang for the buck kinda hikes!
It sure is! Lovely backdrop for the quaint lake.
I'd hike here and could see a cabin at the lake . . . sigh. Such a peaceful hike!
You must live pretty close to Glacier to go there quite often I went there in 1996 I have been there six times enjoyed the video I am from North Carolina
We are fortunate to live about 30 minutes from the west entrance and try to get up there often. :D
That’s good to know. Definitely on the top of my list of things to do next in GNP. I liked the extra footage, too.
Perfect!
Going to hike this trail in early August along with Gunsight Pass Trail etc
Sounds like a plan! I'm not sure I'd make this a primary hike to do in August, but if you've done a lot of other hikes in the park, then it's another good one to do. Remember too that it's a southern exposure hike, so bring lots of water and get an early start. it'll be hot!
Read the article about you on the Flathead Beacon. Congratulations. NOW .... write a guide on how we can get on Going to the Sun Road. 🙄🙂😊
Ha! Not sure how to.
That sounds like a good time on the road without cars, checking everything out without rushing around
It is! I think it's a must do and one of the unique things to do early in the season (before much of the high country is open).
Great video, and we love your map! I'm not crazy about heights and really don't think I can do the goat trail portion of this hike. If the trail was a bit wider maybe, but it looks pretty narrow. I don't see this on the hike 734 map, but is it worth doing Pitamakan Pass as an out-and-back instead? It seems like it would be around 15-17mi total.
Yeah, it's a bit hairier than I'd originally remembered it as I'm not as bothered by heights. Then went on it with some folks who had a fear of heights and they definitely got wigged out! I think your calculations are good for round trip to Pitamakan Pass at a bit over 15 miles.
@@hike734 thanks for the response! Your video as well as others I've seen makes me very sure I can't do that portion of the loop. Know your limits. I think we'll do Dawson Pass one day (use the boat on the return) and maybe do Pitamakan Pass the second day for our last long hike day. I looked at Firebrand Pass as well, but from the descriptions I've seen I think we'd prefer Pitamakin. Of course we'll have alternatives in case of trail closures - learned that lesson the first time we went to Glacier!
@@christysellers9088 yes! Always have backup plans!
How long does it take to hike and can you camp out there with a fire?
So, round trip, it's almost 13 miles, so you've got at least 6 or 7 hours of hiking. The nearest campsite is Atlantic Creek. No wood fires allowed there. You can see where campsites are located and which ones allow wood fires if you go to the park's website (nps.gov/glac), look for Plan Your Visit > Things to do > Wilderness Camping > Wilderness Trip Planning (I would provide the direct link, but it changes almost every year.)
How does this compare to MT Siyeh?
A much much longer day. It's a beast.
Nice Spring hike in the "Last Great Place.” Thanks for the post Jake.
Any time!
Always enjoy your videos.
Glad you like them!
Nice, but I remember it being hot and dry last time. I was not as fresh as you two when I finished.
Did you go in April or July/August? That time of year can be brutal on that south-facing slope with no shade!
I find your lack of snow disturbing, as Vader would say. Going to be another long hot dry summer.
Yeah, unfortunately, the forecast matches your foreboding words. I've seen "Above normal temperatures". Boo.
Been anxiously waiting for this first spring hike update, Jake! Good to see a few glacier lillies! Wonder what the lack of snow pack and early melt means for upcoming fire season? My young grandsons love it when a new video comes out! They can hardly wait. Ya'll take care and keep the content coming this spring and summer. I will keep touting your map(s) for you for sure!
Sweet! Sorry for making you wait so long. Hope to get more out as we explore more. I'm not always sure about how the spring snowpack affects fire season. My inclination is that it's worse for stream levels, but probably also doesn't help if it dries out too quickly. I think that it being much hotter (like hitting 100 or close to it in July) coupled with no rains later in the summer can really make it a tinderbox.
Nice fine on the orange crowned warbler, the warblers are starting to migrate north, I seen 12 spices so far this year more to come in Pennsylvania just starting out
Yeah, you east coasters get such a variety! We have the hummingbirds though. Saw my first Calliope today at my feeder!
Thank you very much for taking me on a lovely little trip.
Our pleasure!
always a great hike with you two! Burned areas are interesting because like you said, we see more.. all kinds of good stuff here, love the flower IDs and great views thanks for taking us along.
For sure! I read a recent article talking about crown fires and, while we always feel like those are the worst/most destructive, there seems to be a cohort of animals that literally go after burned areas from insects to birds (mountain bluebirds and black-backed woodpeckers) and of course some plants thrive where it has catastrophic burns such as fireweed and lodgepole pines.
Love the wildlife and plant closeups. And I'm wondering if that area was subject to periodic prescribed burns before the fire.
Good question. I don't believe so. There were a lot of dead trees in that area from a beetle kill... especially above Big Meadows. That didn't help I'm sure!
All of those meadows will make exceptional grizzly bear habitat if they ever recolonize Colorado.
That's super interesting! I wonder a) if they will and b) if the food sources would be right. I'm assuming they would be pretty good, but not sure. The black bear population in Rocky is pretty small... but they do eat different things.
@hike734 Colorado was once wonderful grizzly bear territory. The last grizzlies in the state were killed around 1974, I think. The ecosystems are just waiting for their return. As I understand, the lack of an effective land corridor blocks their way.
Great video thanks, I love the mountain bluebird I think it's so much prettier then are eastern bluebird, when I was out west I took many pictures of the bluebird
I love them too! They have an almost ethereal blue to them... although the rich blue of the both the western and eastern is pretty amazing. :D
What a difference between a dry year and wet year
100% true!
Incredible hike. Can you tell me how far east of Poia lake that beautiful waterfall is at 2:50 into the video?
Gosh, I'm not exactly sure... less than 1/2 mile I'm guessing. You can also see an earlier part of that by crossing the outlet of the lake and hiking up on a social trail on the ridge. It's wonderful!
What date was this? Is memorial day weekend too soon to get access like this?
Memorial Day weekend is too early. The road won't even be open to the Loop, so you'd be adding a bike pedal just to get to the trailhead. You'd also encounter many dangerous snowfields. We did this on July 4th.
AWEsome hike! so many great views you really pack a lot in here / great wildlife sightings too thanks so much for taking us along
Very nice day to be out skiing North Fork. I’ve seen Big Prairie in full bloom in June/July, but never covered in snow. The Livingston Range never looked so picturesque. Thanks for the vid 🏔
Great video like the views, It would have been nice if you would have seen the wolverine
Tell me about it! I've almost seen wolverines a few times. Literally had people an hour in front or an hour behind tell me that they had just seen one or saw one after I left. It's my white whale for sure!
I rarely see videos of Glacier NP in the winter. Totally different look. Nicely done!
It's a quieter place. I miss being able to get into the high country and having more birds around, but it has its own magic.
I have the Mkii, most recent and share that with my brother. The camera shoots RAW and the JPEGS are decent around 10-12Mb per file. The 400mm can be increased up to 562mm HOWEVER….the file is much smaller in EX-L Mode at 10MP over the 20MP resolution. The only 2 downsides to the EX-L are that there is ZERO image stabilization past the 400mm so keep your framing steady. The Image Quality suffers and you will see it when you go past the 400mm. FYI - I found out from an Optician that the Human Eye Focal Range sits around 150mm with a 1 inch sensor so you will need to subtract that from your 400mm reach leaving you with 250mm of zoom. That will equate to 10x not the full 16x past the eye sight. Many people will ask why the 400mm does not seem that much further than that of the human eye and that is because of these calculations.
This was my very first real hike, 39 years ago and the reason i fell in love with hiking!
It's a great one. Talk about views!
Do you have stats for this hike, miles/vert? I have an experienced group of hikers. We climb the big peaks here in Vegas , the Sierras and a recent trip to the Canadian Rockies. We're looking to do a trip to Glacier and trying to pick the hikes we want to do in the time frame that we have. So those stats would be very helpful as I love this 3 peak hike.
This isn't a hike, but a climb with our notorious loose, sedimentary rock. Honestly, I'm not exactly sure of either the miles or the vertical as my GPS isn't super helpful with the cliffs which jack both.
I spent five days up Dutch Creek in 2005 on a trail crew hitch. The trail hadn't been cut out in many years and we spent a week cutting and doing trail tread work just below the headwall. It's a hidden gem for sure. I'm glad you made this video about it. I wonder how much it's changed in the decade since you were up there and whether the Park Service has sent many or any crews back there.
Thanks for sharing! With the road pretty much always closed from Camas Creek to Logging Creek, it makes a longer day even longer. I need to head back up there!
Interesting, @@hike734 , I didn't realize the inside road was closed there. That definitely makes a wild area even wilder if access is that difficult. Thanks for sharing. I live in SW MT now and haven't been up to GNP in a long time but we're planning a backpacking trip up there this Summer so your video was a nice kickstart to remembering some of the places I appreciated up there during my two summers living in the park's backcountry.
